On September 15, 2024, a tragic plane crash near St. Mary’s, Alaska, claimed the lives of four men aboard a Cessna 207 operated by Yute Commuter Service. The flight, intended as a private journey for a moose-hunting trip, departed from Bethel and encountered adverse weather conditions, including rain and mist, which significantly impaired visibility. As reported by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), another aircraft in the area had turned back due to these challenging conditions shortly before the crash. The Cessna reportedly made two passes over the smaller runway at St. Mary’s airport before attempting a steep descending turn, which tragically ended in disaster within a few thousand feet of the runway. This incident underscores the risks associated with flying in unpredictable Alaskan weather, which often presents visibility challenges in remote areas. The crash has left a lasting impact on the community and highlighted the dangers of navigating rural airstrips in difficult weather.
