Colin Farrell‘s illustrious career as a leading man in Hollywood has seen him net numerous awards and nominations, including two Golden Globe nods. But Farrell has also earned plaudits and widespread respect for his advocacy and reputation as one of the film industry’s “good guys.”

Farrell’s reputation has been cemented with the establishment of his self-titled foundation, which is intended to honor the actor’s 20-year-old son James. Farrell spoke at length to People about his new initiative — with his son, who has been diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, at the foundation’s forefront.

Farrell asks for kindness and respect

Angelman syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects a person’s nervous system. Telltale signs include cognitive and developmental disabilities as well as a specific facial appearance, in addition to problems with speech and balance.

With James soon to be “on his own” at 21 years old, and without “safeguards” such as special education classes, “Miami Vice” star Farrell found it vital to get his new foundation up and running.

I want the world to be kind to James,” Farrell told People. “I want the world to treat him with kindness and respect.”

In an achingly honest admission, Farrell revealed that while he speaks to his son as if he is a 20-year-old adult, he hasn’t been able to determine whether James is “comfortable” with having a foundation forged in his honor.

“I have to make a call based on knowing James’ spirit and what kind of young man he is and the goodness that he has in his heart,” Farrell explained.
